When researching hair regrowth products, I came across one called ScalpMED that was advertising via infomercials. It came with the usual promises of halting baldness and causing hair to regrow, and there was a version of the product for men and women, which is useful for everyone who wants to use it.
It seems good to me so far, but does it really work? Or is it just a scam? I set out to find out.
ScalpMED Ingredients
ScalpMed has three key formulas to help tackle hair loss:
- Vitadil-5A (which has minoxidil in it)
- Nutrisol-RM
- PhytoComplex
They use mostly natural ingredients, including beta-sitosterol, green tea, and saw palmetto extract. You'll also find some promising anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric and horsetail extract.
For moisture, there are compounds like panthenol and linoleic acid. Plus, they’ve included vitamins and minerals like biotin and zinc, which I think are essential if you're looking to combat hair loss because deficiencies in these can contribute to thinning hair.
One major drawback with ScalpMED is its lack of full ingredient transparency. While it promotes key actives like minoxidil, saw palmetto, and beta-sitosterol, the company does not provide a complete ingredients list for its Nutrisol® and Vitadil® formulas, or for its supporting products like the shampoo or scalp detox spray.
This lack of detail makes it difficult to:
- Identify potential allergens or irritants
- Understand how the formula compares to other options
- Determine whether the added ingredients are present in meaningful amounts
ScalpMED also doesn’t clearly state the concentration of minoxidil used in Vitadil, though it is most likely 5%, similar to standard Rogaine. However, without labeling it openly, users are left guessing, especially since both 2% and 5% formulas are commonly used in hair loss products, with different results and side effect profiles.
The key ingredient in ScalpMED is Minoxidil, which is an FDA-approved ingredient used in many hair regrowth products like Rogaine or Lipogaine. The problem with this ingredient is highlighted in the clinical study on this ingredient:
“Minoxidil must be used indefinitely for continued support of existing hair follicles and the maintenance of any experienced hair regrowth” – Minoxidil study
This means you need to keep using ScalpMED to keep any hair regrowth that occurs, which brings us to the next point.
Dosage Instructions & Application Protocol
Another area where ScalpMED falls short is clarity around how to properly use the system. The product involves multiple steps, but it’s not immediately clear:
- When and how often each component should be applied (once or twice daily?)
- Whether Nutrisol or Vitadil comes first
- How many pumps or sprays are needed per use
- If products should be left on the scalp or rinsed out
For a system that includes a cleanser, activator, and minoxidil-based regrowth formula, clear instructions are essential not only for results but also to avoid overuse or underuse. Confusing application protocols could reduce effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.
ScalpMed Safety & Side Effects Profile
While ScalpMED is based on minoxidil, a well-researched hair regrowth agent, it can still cause side effects, particularly if used incorrectly. Here’s what users should be aware of:
Possible Side Effects:
- Scalp irritation or dryness
- Itching, redness, or flaking
- Unwanted facial hair growth, especially in women
- Dizziness or rapid heartbeat (rare, but possible with minoxidil absorption)
- Allergic reactions to other undisclosed ingredients in the formula
In fact, several user reviews across the internet mention burning sensations or rashes, which could be attributed to either the minoxidil or added botanicals in the system. ScalpMED should be used with caution, especially by those with sensitive skin or allergies.
ScalpMED Cost
Perhaps the most important question: Is ScalpMED worth the high price tag?
| Product | Minoxidil Strength | Price (Approx.) | Additional Ingredients | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ScalpMED System | Likely 5% (undisclosed) | $100+ per month | Proprietary (undisclosed) blends | All-in-one system with DHT blockers | Expensive, lacks transparency |
| Generic Minoxidil | 5% | $25–40 per month | None | Affordable | No DHT-blockers included, potential negative side effects |
| Profollica | 2-step system + supplement | $50–60 per month | DHT-blockers + nutrients | Natural, full transparency | Not as fast-acting as minoxidil |
In my opinion, with ScalpMed, you’re paying a premium for a product that isn’t much more than minoxidil with a mystery herbal cocktail, while cheaper, better-documented options exist. Without published studies or full disclosure of ingredients, it’s difficult to justify the cost, especially when generic Rogaine and well-formulated naturals like Profollica offer more value and transparency.
The company behind ScalpMED at the time of writing sells it via a re-billing system. Whereby you pay a relatively cheap introductory price and then are locked into a recurring payment of $160 every two months.
They rely on the fact that many people won't remember to cancel the trial and will be billed over and over again for products they potentially don't need.
I prefer to have more control over the amount of a product that I buy and when I buy it.
Refund Policy and Auto-Billing Practices
ScalpMED’s 120-day money-back guarantee might sound reassuring, but there are some caveats:
- The return window begins from the date of purchase, not the day it arrives.
- You must return all bottles (even empty ones) to qualify for a refund.
- Return shipping is not covered, and you may be charged restocking fees.
Some customers have reported issues with auto-renewals and recurring charges. If you sign up for their “value kit” or subscription, you may be automatically billed every 60–90 days, even if you haven’t finished the first batch. Cancelling can involve long phone calls and delays, something to be wary of if you're not ready for a long-term commitment.
Clinical Trials & Proof
I could not find any clinical trials to support ScalpMED's claims.
Although the company refers to ScalpMED as being FDA approved, they mean only Minoxidil is FDA approved, not the product. As it says in the website's small print:
“ScalpMED® is not endorsed by the FDA or any other government agency.”
Testimonials
The testimonials on the ScalpMED website look impressive but I wanted to delve deeper to find out what real users are saying.
Some users complain that they had an allergic reaction to the product and that it didn't work for them:
“It's been over 2 months and I see no result whatsoever. In fact, I seemed to have lost more hair.”
“My husband used it for about two weeks then his scalp broke out in a rash that spread to his eyes”
The biggest complaints seemed to stem from unexpected charges on credit cards. One woman was sent the male formula by mistake, which she returned and then fought to get a refund:
“I just want my money back. I've been calling them many times about this and still no action was made. Scalpmed has no conscience at all.” – complaintsboard
The Verdict
Although I wouldn't call this product a scam, I really can't recommend ScalpMED for causing permanent hair regrowth.
Not only because of the fact that you need to keep using it forever to maintain hair regrowth, which could rack up a lot of money, but also because it seems to be difficult to cancel the free trial or get a refund.
Plus, there are better products out there, like Profollica. Profollica has a unique formula that sets out to permanently restore and regrow lost hair via a powerful and easy-to-take supplement.
There is no shady re-billing, simply buy as much as you need and stop using it when your hair returns.
Many customers say it is inexpensive compared to other hair restoration products on the market at the moment.
